We are used to hear the same questions from our curious customers. Before visiting Costa Rica, we advise you to take a look at this page where we ave summarised every information you will need to get the best out of your visit in Costa Rica.

WHAT IS THE BEST TIME TO VISIT COSTA RICA

The best time to visit the country is during the dry period, from November to May. Wetter seasons have the advantage of being less crowded. The end of year celebrations and Holy Week (early April) are considered peak times. Traveling between April and July or between October and December is also a good compromise.

The climates are quite varied depending on the regions you cross. Like any equatorial country, it can change its climate at any time, all year round. Below is an explanatory table of the Costa Rican weather:

Région Average Temperature (°C) Rain Season Dry Season Feature
Central region 22 May to Novembre December to April MILD weather
Caribbean coast 26 The whole year but especially from May to January VERY HUMID CLIMATE
North Pacific (Nicoya/Guanacaste) 27 May to October November to April HOT weather
South Pacific (Manuel Antonio, Corcovado) 27 May to November November to April HOT HUMID weather

SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

Costa Rica has a reputation as a peaceful country, one of the safest in Latin America. “Pura Vida” is a Costa Rican expression known to all that sums up the good humor and tranquility of the country. However, it is advisable to remain vigilant, to follow common sense and the advice given to tourists:

Crocodile Costa Rica 1
  • Avoid attempting petty crime as much as possible by avoiding signs of wealth as much as possible: jewelry, designer clothes, accessories, etc.

  • Leave your credit card and passport at the hotel if you don’t need them. Make photocopies of important documents.

  • In the Central Valley region, going out alone at night is not always a good idea, especially in areas with few tourists or on streets with little traffic. Choose a taxi to get home, ask your hotel or the restaurant/bar where you are to call one for you.

  • In the unfortunate event of an attack, do not resist.

  • Ask the locals themselves for advice on where to go and where not to go. The ‘ticos’ are very friendly and welcoming, they will be happy to help you.

Nature, magnificent in Costa Rica, can also involve certain dangers: the powerful currents of the Pacific Ocean, volcanic eruptions or the proximity of wildlife. But with a little caution and following the recommendations of national parks, guides and local authorities, it doesn’t really pose any real dangers.

TRAVELING TO COSTA RICA

HEALTH AND SANITARY CONDITIONS

Even if the health risks are relatively low and the medical infrastructures of good quality in the country, any trip to the Latin American continent requires some precautions.

Before your departure, it is important to take out good travel insurance that guarantees treatment or repatriation if necessary. Remember to check the insurance associated with the credit card you will use to buy your plane tickets, sometimes they already offer a very good level of cover.

We also advise you to bring a first aid kit with the usual medicines for a trip with complete peace of mind. All cities have pharmacies for occasional needs.

Infos pratiques - Vaccins

VACCINES

No vaccine is required to enter Costa Rica. Cases of dengue and rare cases of malaria have been identified in the country and it is necessary to protect against mosquitoes.

Infos pratiques - Conditions physiques

PHYSICAL CONDITION

Altitude and changing weather conditions may require more physical effort. Even if you have a good physical level and are used to hiking, the routes in Costa Rica will require more effort (especially in certain national parks such as Corcovado or Los Quetzales).

Infos pratiques - Eau potable

POTABLE WATER

Tap water is safe to drink in most of the country. Many drinking water taps are available in national parks, car parks, etc.
We still advise you to bring a water bottle with you, to avoid the accumulation of plastic bottles. There are also water bottles, with an integrated filter, which work very well: we recommend Life Straw or Water Go.

PRACTICAL LIFE

NATURE AND BIODIVERSITY

Costa Rica has one of the richest natural heritages in the world.

It is quite simply the country with the highest density of species in the world! There are more animal species in Costa Rica (a country almost as small as Switzerland) than in all of Europe! The incredible diversity of landscapes offers travelers access to unique flora and fauna that are waiting for you.

THE UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE OF SPORT

Costa Ricans are sports lovers, they practice it regularly and love thrills. They are mainly football and cycling fans. Costa Rica never ceases to fascinate travelers with its natural beauty and will delight contemplatives as much as sports enthusiasts: surfing of course, but also hiking, mountain biking or water activities such as rafting and kayaking are among the essentials.

PICTURES WITH THE LOCALS

Costa Ricans are not shy and like to have their picture taken. However, it is always better to ask permission first.

Indigenous peoples relate to the complex image, it is not advisable to take a photo of them.
