The Central American Isthmus is one of the hotspots of the Pacific Ring of Fire. With more than 200 volcanic formations identified in a territory that’s smaller than Lake Michigan, Costa Rica is the destination of choice for budding geologists. During this journey we offer visits to four volcanoes, three of which are active. Marvel at one of the most imposing craters in the world, pose on the sides of a ‘textbook perfect’ cone or discover the multiple geological phenomena at the foot or at the top of these colossi.

  • Taking an unique trip without missing the essentials
  • Discover extreme landscapes
  • Volcano and geology lovers
  • Enjoying nature

I have always been fascinated by these monsters of nature that are volcanoes. One of the reasons why I fell in love with Costa Rica: an incredible diversity of geological phenomena, spectacular craters and of course as always here, a magnificent tropical nature at the foothill of these giants!

San José airport

San José airport or Liberia airport

Begin your journey by arriving in the Central Valley before quickly departing for the highest volcano in the country: Irazu Volcano. Then, after visiting the Basilica of Los Angeles, visit Poas Volcano and its majestic craters. Then head to the heart of the country and Arenal Volcano, famous for its conical shape, natural hot springs and exuberant natural surroundings. Then head to the Tenorio Volcano, a wonder of nature, where mineral forces are dying a river with heavenly blue, the famous Río Celeste.

Finally take the road to the Rincon de la Vieja National Park in the north of the country. While not spectacular in its form, this volcano has impressive geological phenomenon. Finally, after all these adventures in the lands of fire, relax on the edges of the outstanding beaches on the Guanacaste Peninsula.
