Tortuguero and the Caño Negro refuge

DETAILED PROGRAMME

Day 1: Transfer from San José to Tortuguero (4h) We leave the valley of San José to cross the central volcanic chain. The road, then the track leads us to the pier of the Suerte river. We embark on a large canoe to descend the troubled and tropical waters of the river to enter one of the most wild and biologically intense areas of the territory. Here we are in Tortuguero. Afternoon to visit the village located on a strip of sand between the Caribbean Sea and the river. (Night in Tortuguero)

Day 2: Tours in the PN Tortuguero channels:. As its name indicates in Tortuguero (which could be translated as “Tortuguière”) there are turtles, but not all year round!. Tortuguero is the most important nesting site in the world for the green sea turtle. Night tours are organized by local guides so that you can respectfully observe the thousand-year-old egg-laying spectacle. The Tortuguero National Park takes the form of a maze of canals that facilitate the observation of nature. From small boats, you can observe troops of monkeys, sloths, iguanas, toucans and many other animals. (Overnight in Tortuguero)

Day 3: Transport from Tortuguero to Caño Negro (3h30) Departure in the morning for the Refuge de Vie Silvestre de Caño Negro. This marshy biotope offers a privileged observation context. Stop to photograph the bands of waders then get on a small boat and approach the banks where herons and caimans coexist. Let yourself be guided through this biologically intense maze. Return to San José in the evening.
